ODC has been applied in several industry verticals. What began with software development, then grew into multi-product organizations has now been applied in IT Servivces. Clients use ODC on call-center issues dealing with what can be termed "non-defect", such as help desk. On the technology stack there are applications in database, networks, storage, operating systems, applications and device controllers. One of the less known application is hardware. Several recent clients are in companies that have applications that deal with warehousing, procurement, insurance etc.
Nortel and IBM executives shared their ODC experiences at IEEE ISSRE conferences and noted their product development cost savings running into hundereds of million dollars. Such large savings are typically realized over a 2-3 year period, when supported by senior management taking a keen interest and at the project level by a technically skilled center of excellence.
